We plan to use this page to provide you with useful information and hyperlinks to advise students who have additional physical or learning needs.
We all want our students to fully achieve their potential. To do this we need to understand them, their abilities and difficulties. We all may need advice as to the provision and support available post 16/18.
The Statutory Guidance for Schools makes clear that they must provide face-to-face careers guidance for all young people with a learning difficulty and/or disability, regardless of whether they have a statement of special educational needs or not. This also applies to the student at a sixth form, college or apprenticeship/traineeship.
Local authorities should provide careers advice up until the age of 25 if you have a EHCP (or Section 139a Learning Difficulty Assessment (LDA)). Always check the local government site for up to date information. www.leeds.gov.uk
At school the Careers Adviser meets with the student (and parent if possible) from year 9. This is organised by the school SENCO. In year 9 it is just the start of exploring future possibilities and getting to know the student. In year 11 the Career Plan becomes a part of the EHCP.
If you have information which will be useful to teachers and parents please send it to us for inclusion on this page.
MyPlus, provider of one of the UK’s leading online advisory services in graduate recruitment for disabled students, MyPlus Students’ Club, has launched a Toolkit for University Careers Advisers. While the toolkit is intended for a Careers Adviser it will be useful for parents and teachers who are supporting a student who has the ability to go to university.
The toolkit provides specialist information, resources and guidance for University staff who are supporting the 13% of disabled undergraduate students as they search for placements, internships and graduate roles.
Leeds City Council have published the LEEDS LOCAL OFFER FOR SEN PUPILS. This lists the local provision and is well worth a look.
